Moving & Packing

Just when you thought it was over with…..The worst human experience ever continues!

Moving is definitely a big job, but also, worth it!   Hopefully you have the big things taken care of, but here is a list of the smaller things that will make a difference if you plan ahead and work on it a little at a time.

30 Days Out:

Start looking for and storing packing materials. This includes sturdy moving boxes of different sizes, packing tape, permanent markers and wrapping materials. If you want to save $$ watch for ads where neighbors will let you just pick up their “used” packing materials.

25 Days Out:

Start the sorting and purging! While going through this process consider if any items require special attention like a Piano. A lot of items can be donated to local shelters. Important: Set aside records needed for school enrollment in a safe place. Nightmares are made of lost documents.
It might be worth a few phone calls to current and upcoming schools to see exactly what is needed.

20 Days Out:

Notify important contacts of address change. Banks, Credit Card companies, Insurance providers, Magazines and Newspaper services. Don’t forget the Post Office! They offer a handy packet that will help you with forwarding orders. Leave your new address with a close neighbor in case stragglers are delivered that they can grab for you.

15 Days Out:

Make phone calls to change over utilities. Choose a date for both turning off where you are leaving and turning on where you are going. Cable, electricity, gas, water and trash.

7 Days Out:

Start emptying the refrigerator and freezer. Use what you can but at least 24 hours in advance of moving it, the refrigerator needs to be emptied so there is time to get rid of the moisture inside. If you don’t know what you are doing, check out www.wikihow.com/Defrost-a-Freezer for help.

We hope your move is a dream, not a nightmare.
